Accidents happen and illness can occur anytime, usually in the most inappropriate place or when the cause is no longer apparent. I have lost count of the number of times over the years I have had to perform first aid on a dog, not always mine and on more occasions than one I’ve had to get first aid myself afterwards! It is important to remember, not always easy in a panicky situation, that dogs cannot tell us where the pain is, why it is there or how acute it is. Their only defence is to bite, howl or retreat, especially if trying to...

I have 4 clumbers and a springer, so in total we are looking at a total 165 kilo of dog!
Yesterday on Tesco’s sell off shelf there was 2 packs of pig liver and 1 pack of sliced heart with a total price £2.10. In the fridge I had a sorry looking neep that wasn’t used on burns night alongside some rather wilted carrots and half a bag of sorry looking mange tout and some left over mash tatties.
I diced the meat, diced the veg and chucked it all in the dog’s stock pot. I then added a cup of water with a couple of tablespoons...

“My Dogs Are Fighting!”
“My Dogs seem to be Hunting or Fighting with Other Animals!
“My dog wants to dominate me!“
I am often asked questions about dog management; the following are typical and is the behaviourists worse nightmare:
Q: I am the owner of two female dogs. These dogs haven’t always fought. Until recently, they’ve been good friends and pack mates. However, during thee last few weeks as one growls at the other, a fight begins. Neither dog is a spayed, one is a three year old female; the...

Pigs head!
We often get pig heads. Sometimes they come cut in half but often a whole head. If you are not squeamish then they really are an ideal source of dog meat…lets face it…not so many years ago the components of a pig’s head was thought of as good human food. I and my sisters certainly grew up eating it and the dogs got what we couldnt/didnt eat. Brawn, tongue, cheeks, homemade haslet etc…if you haven’t had braised pig cheeks in a thick brown gravy with mash you have missed a real tasty dish and as a...

What is in a dog?
When choosing a puppy or a rescue it is important to understand the genetics that make up the dog, after all s/he is hopefully going to be with you a long time. One of the biggest mistakes that folk make is to go on looks only…but all pups are cute and all rescues behind those bars have a ‘take me home’ look. The more research you do on the breeds you like the look of the more you will understand what needs you will have to provide.
Dogs are grouped into ‘types’. The Kennel Club (UK) has 7...

Countless dogs are restricted to a lunge or leash, many are re-homed or worse, because their owners can’t stop them hunting or have allowed it to happen so often the dog thinks it is the way to be. Many dog trainers tell them that ‘It’s a recall problem, more management and cue fluency needed’ and that will certainly help, but there is more to the hunt than that, and humans need to understand the root drives of the hunt in order for behavioural re-modification to work.
To understand the concept of the hunt we need to go into the dogs...

Do you give your dogs fruit and veg?
Canines are meat eaters…but…they do graze and if they’re wild canines then they eat the stomach contents of the grazers that are their prey. My ethos is actually very simple…if they eat it then they 1) like it and 2) they know it good for them….
Because i feed natural, my dogs from tiny pups onwards, get fruit, vegetables and herbs…and any rescue dogs that come in very quickly pick up the habit. I am lucky as i have a large garden and we grow stuff, but the one area...

You need to get ready to go out making all the signals (self cues) very obvious – like pack up a bag – picking up the keys – making it look as if you are very intent and focused on getting ready. Do this repeatedly until the dog isn’t bothered at you getting ready and it is meaningless to him/her.
Then you move on this routine to involve him/her – ‘right then boyo/girlie am off – see you later’ calm but no fuss or touching him/her – leave dog with a toy or and kong or a buster cube etc...

Dietary requirements for healthy dogs
Individual dogs have individual nutritional requirements, even within the same breed, their dietary needs require to be adjusted according to their lifestyle and environment and importantly, for each of the life stages.
There are 6 groups of nutrients.
Proteins
Carbohydrates
Fats
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Within these groups are the 45 individual nutrients that are needed by dogs in order to stay healthy. The quality of the diet is determined by the appropriate blend of these nutrients not the...

Look for local game butchers and get to know them – chat – buy some of your meat from them and get them to save anything and everything – you can sort it out once home.
Contact local shoots – see if any off them sell the excess of rabbits etc
Supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi, Netto sell human graded cheap meats and cuts and frozen free flow mince at a good price – get to know their sell off days – usually Thursday and Monday. …They also sell good quality sardines in oil for around 30p a tin.
If you have a local market – get...
