MAKE IN JUST 10 MINUTES
This tuna loaf dog treat recipe was given to me by Alison, the owner of Brodie and Harris! It’s mysimplest homeade dog friendly recipes that is prepared and cooked within 10 minutes! We’re gonna be using a 1.1L food storage container found in any supermarker to make this but you can use a large bowl and cover with a large plate.
INGREDIENTS
2 tins of tuna in oil or water, 2 eggs, 160g of flour (wholemeal or plain), 1 garlic clove or 1 small teaspoon of lazy garlic. But isn’t garlic bad for dogs?
METHOD
Our Ingredients
Add 2 tins of tuna in oil (use the oil/water).
Add two eggs
Add 160g (5½ oz) of flour
Add 1 crushed garlic clove or 1 small teaspoon of chopped garlic
Mix everything together to form a thick paste-like consistency.
Spread into a microwave-safe container. This is a typical 1.1L size available at every supermarket.
Or you can buy here.
can I bake them in a oven? And if so what temp? And can I Dehydrate these in a Food dehydrator ?
I doubt it would dehydrate well. You could bake it in the over, look at the liver cake recipe for more info as they quite similar.
Can I use ordinary plain or self raising flour
Either is fine Linda
My 7 month old pup went daft over this, highly recommend it.
just made this for my dog used tuna in brine but drianed the brine off and rinsed tuna and added sunflower oil instead measured the amount of brine and added the same amount of oil dog loves them.
Hey, thanks, really pleased your dog liked them.
I have made this loads of time…great for dog training (I cut up & freeze)…my Shepherd has food allergies & can only eat fish based food (but no Salmon) so I’m looking for more fish recipes ? (I’ve made your sardine cakes too) 🙂
i always thought garlic was bad for dogs as it is a member of the onion family or have i been misinformed ?
It is extremely toxic for dogs and a small amount can even kill them

Hi. You all say garlic is harmful but in liver cake recipe there is garlic clove in ingredients…
It’s like everything in moderation I have had shepherds for 40years and they have had garlic they have all had trouble free lives from illness
Hi can I use tune in brine?
I successfully substitute porridge oats for strong flour (to avoid grain content) when making liver cake. Does this work with the tuna loaf? Suppose it can be cooked the same way as liver cake — ???
I don’t have a microwave xD but how long can I oven cook them for?
I cooked it at 200C for about 25 minutes
Hi, this might sound like a daft question but once frozen do you defrost before giving to your dog? Look forward to trying the tuna loaf.
Hey Zoe. Yeah, but they should only take a 10 minutes to defrost.
I use any tinned fish, mackerel etc. but do not use in brine as too much salt for dogs. also I cook in oven, just guess time and temperature. mine love the mackerel in tomato sauce cake.
Instead of normal flour can chickpea flour used instead like the pancake recipe? as I’ve been told my Yorkie may have a wheat allergy.
Yeah, that’s fine Kim.
According to Google, 160g is 1 and 1/2 cups, for those in the US.
Anyone have a response to my question…. are these recipes suitable for an 8 week old puppy?
Yeah, they fine, but like all treats give in moderation.
Did the taste test and now my dog is dancing round the kitchen on her hind legs trying to get at the tuna cake! Must be good, thank you!
Thanks Viv!
Hope your dog likes it!
Jamie
We will be welcoming an eight week old puppy soon, can these recipes be used for one so young? Please advise. Thanks
Sorry if this has been asked before but is th oil important? I normally buy tuna in water, could I add in a bit of olive oil or sunflower oil?
If your buying tuna to make these for your dogs, can’t you just buy it in oil, I do. June
yeah, whatever you want. the oil just helps it bind.
LOVE your website Many thanks
Garlic bad for dogs,,, I have given my garlic pearls every day along with brewers years for worm/flea control and my vet totally goes along with it. I do think though that its the volume of garlic or onions that is given that can cause an issue so people may wish to research prior to giving their dog garlic. My one girl is 15 soon and still going strong. As for tuna,, all of mine love it so this loaf is on the menu,, thank you.
Definately going to try this but no microwave!! How long should I cook it for ?
I’ve never tried it in the oven, just keep an eye on it and if you’d like to let me know I can add it to the recipe.
Keen to know about timing in oven as mentioned previously. Has anyone done this successfully please??? I’ve made several of the other recipes already and seem to all get the seal of approval from all my 3 dogs!
You can do it in frying pan, too. Make sure frying pan hot, then fry gently over medium heat for couple of minutes on each side. Stick fork in the middle to check if done – if fork teeth dry when you pull it out, it is done, if not, fry a bit longer . Tuna cooks quickly.
what size can’s of tuna are you using ?
Do you drain the oil off the tuna? Or mix it in with the flour and eggs???
Hi Sharon,
Add the oil from the tuna too!
Hi, a note about garlic: It’s really good for dogs and you can give dogs garlic supplements to help with blood flow, thus proper heart and other organ function. It’s great for general well being. It’s only a problem if a dog consumes a large amount like a whole bulb or more. On the whole it’s a very beneficial addition to dog food and treats.
So easy to do and less smelly than liver cake! Really good treats for training when cut into small pieces. Magic (a black lab puppy) loves them and will sit quietly watching me make a batch. Recipe freezes well. Thanks.
Do you feed straight from freezer?
Hi,
I really wanna try this recipe but I’m just wondering, wouldn’t it affect the coat of my dogs? I have 6 Sharpei, they have sensitive skin, and from what I know tuna is acrid.
Thanks.
Hi Joan!
Acrid? You mean smelly? To be honest I don’t know how it would affect your dogs but if you don’t want to try Tuna then try another fish like Sardines.
i give my 4mth old pup sardines every day. going to make this today for her.she loves fish.
Thanks Andrew! Hope your pup loves them! 🙂
fish oil is good for coats, they contain a lot of Omega 3 fat, which helps give the coat a great shine
I just made a batch of these for my fur babies an they luv them – both gobbled them up straight away! On to the liver cake recipe next 🙂
hi thanks for recipes I made the oat cakes n tuna loaf today as a tester for our boys ( a 10yrs rottie n 9month gshep) at 1st didn’t know what to make of them but soon ate them couldn’t get them in fast enough, and the shep was sat by my side sniffing whole time making them hahah, so easy and quick to make, I set to make a bigger batch to freeze for them now I know they like them thanks again for tips and recipes and sure I can vouch for our boys hahah:)
Thanks for sharing Steph! I’m looking for a freezer just for dog treats so I can start making huge batches! Glad your dogs enjoy them!
How long would these stay fresh? I’m happy to freeze but wondered how long they might last initially/once unfrozen.
Sound great, but don’t have a microwave… any idea how long I should cook in an electric oven? Thanks
Yeah, follow the liver cake instructions but use tuna instead of liver. https://www.bdws.co.uk/2011/09/11/homemade-liver-cake-recipe-worlds-greates/
are these ok treat for puppys? any problem using tuna in brine thats all i have at the moment
Hi Craig. To be honest I’m not too sure if brine is ok or not. Brine is salty water and I’m not sure how dogs are with that extra salt. I’ve contacted my canine dietitian and hopefully she’ll reply soon, but for me, I’d just stick with the oily type.
Hi! I just want to give you a heads up that garlic is not safe for dogs. Nothing from the onion family is. Even in dried/powder form. It can cause a type of blood disorder that is fatal. Other than that, excited to try your recipe!
Hi Amanda!
My canine dietitician uses garlic as a means of preventing ticks. I was at a dog walker workshop today where a vet attended so I asked him and he said it was good for keeping ticks away cause they don’t like the smell/taste, but onions were bad. On returning I spoke to my dietician tonight who said….
“it been a debate for yonks…they would have to eat kilo’s of it for it to be harmful lol …but eat kilo’s of lots of stuff and it harmful..
as your vet said it good for treating ticks, it a natural blood cleanser..it a good anti cancer agent etc
i would rather feed my dog a small amount of garlic to keep away ticks than risk giving them a chemical flea treatment in order to protect them against such things as lyme disease”
This looks quite a wet treat which might make it difficult to use in training classes….is it?
This sounds perfect for my dog, thanks. I have a tin of pink salmon, can I substitute that for the tuna?
I don’t see why not! Give it a try and let me know how you get on!
oooh Poppy will love this recipe, thank you so much for sharing it xx
I used to buy canned food until my friend recommended me this resource. Since then I cook for my german shepperd myself.
I must thank you for all wonderful recipes, he loves this one the most.
Thanks Katy! 🙂
Thanks. Just what I was looking for. Will make some soon.
Thanks Marilyn! Quick and easy, you can’t go wrong!
Hi,thanks for this easy recipe which I made for Rosie yesterday and she loves it 🙂 Going to make liver cake tomorrow! Love your website!
Thanks Andrea! Have fun cooking tomorrow!
thank you for this simple recipe. My dog now has a treat that she can digest just fine.
🙂
Very quick to make and my dogs love it, great as training treats as it can be chopped into really small pieces
can this be frozen and also how do you know how much you should feed?
Hi Niki! Yeah it can be frozen once it’s cooled down! Just feed as you would with any other treat!
