A homemade travel sickness rememdy for dogs

Add ginger to biscuits and you can make a delicious dog treat.  Ginger has been known for a long time to be very effective in combating motion sickness in dogs as well as people.  These biscuits are easy to make and dogs think they are very tasty whether they’re traveling or not!  Because we are making gingerbread men, I’m using a gingerbread man biscuit cutter, you can buy here if you need one.

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. You can use cake tins lined with baking paper – greaseproof. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

  1. Can these be frozen?

    • yes

  2. Hi Jamie – do you happen to know if the quantity stays the same if I use ground ginger instead of fresh?

    Reply
    • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger is the equivalent to 1 1/4 teaspoons of ground or 1 tablespoon crystallized ginger. Hope this helps.

    • Great – first batch made in time for a playdate this weekend, and so far they’re a hit!

    • Waiting (sort of) patiently for a second one…

    • Ah, brill thanks for posting that. Very sweet and biscuits look great!

  3. Just took a batch of these out of the oven. They look lovely. Will let you know what my doggos think later.

  7. just found your recipes loads to try am going to make various biscuits to help raise money for a dog rescue, can you substitute the self raising flour for wholemeal flour ?

    • Yeah any flour is fine. Hope it goes well.

  8. Only just found you but have made these twice now and my dog adores them. So do I – they’re so easy to do – and I know exactly what’s in them rather than shop bought ‘lottery’ treats. This time as I made them she was laying by my feet – I think she knew!
    Thanks for sharing the recipe.

    • Thanks Linzi. That’s very kind of you to say. It’s one of my faves too but gets overlooked somewhat for the other recipes.

  11. Cinnamon is bad for dogs, it needs to be Ceylon cinnamon in dog food.

    • Cinnamon is fine for dogs…it’s nutmeg that isn’t good for them.

  12. Just made these for my dogs. They smell so good that my daughter wants to try them as well!

    • Hey!

Try 30 mins before you leave. I’ve had a few dogs that suffer from travel sickness. One remedy is a good run before travelling. Tbh, if it was my dog, I’d exercise it, then car drive, somewhere nice to walk with dog, car drive, somewhere else nice and do this for a few days.

  17. Didn’t have any little men cutters so used small bone and ‘Setter’ shape cutters. Met with a little suspicion at first but now my IRS loves these.

    • Did you get by without or did you buy some C? Pic from you FB page looks great!

    • I found a rogue bag that had fallen to the back of the cupboard and had just enough to make these! The dogs loved them and the people at dog club thought they smelled great! A nice change from the usual pongy liver and tuna cakes we usually have smelling out our pockets. Waggy tails all around 🙂

  20. Great recipe, my little cocker spaniel loves these. Made them by cutting out shapes using the end of an apple corer, so they made good little bite size treats for training too. Thank you 🙂

    • Hi, was wondering if you use powdered ginger or fresh?
      Regards

    • Looks like powdered from the pictures Di. I’m going to make these for my sister’s dog who gets really car sick, might even keep a few for my own dog too!!

    • Powdered, but either or…
