Pig trotter brawn

Pig trotter dog food

I actually came up with this when making pig trotter brawn for myself but I was so impressed with it and with how it firmly set in it’s own jelly that I thought I just HAD to publish it as a dog food recipe.  Of course your dog will love it, they will adore it and it’s so good for them – didn’t you know pig’s feet are superfood!?  Pig trotters are packed with collagen so are great for joints and are dead easy to buy online.  You can buy pig trotters here and here. So there you go!  And cooking is easy – just cook for 4 hours in water in a big pot or 2 hours in a pressure cooker (I use and recommend this one).  Then de-bone, chuck flesh back in stock, add some veg, cook through, serve into containers and fridge.  That’s it. Let’s get cooking!

INGREDIENTS

4 Pig Feet

200g (7 oz)  of peas

METHOD

pig trotters in pot

Add 4 pig trotters to a large pot and add water.

cooked pig trotters in pot

Bring to boil, put lid on pot and simmer for 4 hours

pig trotters in a bowl

Place pig trotters in bowl to cool. Keep stock!

pig trotter stock

Discard bones, nails, cartilage etc and add everything else back to stock

Adding peas to pig trotters

Add a couple of big handfuls of veg. I'm using frozen peas and cook through.

Serving pig trotter brawn into containers

While warm serve into containers. I'll get approximately 10-11 servings using 200ml containers. Leave to cool and fridge.

Once cooled it will set firmly.

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. You can use cake tins lined with baking paper – greaseproof. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

  1. I’m so excited to try this. My family (Polish) used to make pickled pigs feet. I never acquired a taste for it but I recently saw pigs feet in the local meat market and thought it might be good to use for my dog. I can’t wait to make these for her.

  3. Hi, I was just wondering if you could tell me how long do you think it lasts in the fridge and will it freeze? Thanks

  4. I cooked your liver bread recipe for my 12 week old cockapoo and he absolutely adores it. Thanks for making the recipe available.

  5. is it normal for the jelly to turn liquid ?

    Reply
    • Did it start of as jelly then go liquid or just not set?

    • after boiling, let it cool put in the fridge it was still liquid.. when i remove from fridge it was jelly and while waiting for it to room temperature to feed the dogs, it turned liquid

    • Sounds just like a little too much water that time.

  6. Just a polite enquiry but if you do not refrigerate and remove fat accumulated on top prior to serving aren’t the levels of fat dangerous for long term health or dogs diagnosed with pancreatic disorders

  7. Hi Jamie! Just about to try this recipe for my meat mad Staffy pup. Using my slow cooker for the simmer, was wondering whether it’d be suitable to pop veg, like carrots etc in, to add to the flavour? Deb ☺️

    • Yeah, just chuck in any old veg you think your dog will like.

    • Thank you Jamie, went with fine diced cooked carrot and peas. It made seven smallish tupperware tubs, so very economical too. Poppy loves it!

    • How long do you cook it for in the slow cooker?
      Dying to try it!

  12. How much would my 15 year old border collie need per day in weight or mls?

    Reply
    • That would depend on how active they are. The easiest way is to feed and add or takeaway depending on if they put on or lose weight.

  13. Hi Jamie,
I boiled up two pigs trotters and left them to cool. All that was left was a lot of bones and skin. Do you put the skin in as well?

    • Hi Julie!

Keep everything but dispose of the bones and anything hard. Keep the skin that’s the best bit! Yum!!

    • My dog loved it! I kept topping up the liquid when the trotters were cooking so I’ve got a lot of stock left – any suggestions what I can do with it?

    • Good stuff!

Well there’s probably a lot of gelatine in that stock. If it was me I’d have added it to the food or try setting some aside and chilling it and see if it sets. If it sets it could make a fabulous Kong filler or you could add some meat to it for more dog food.

  14. Hi,

Thank you for posting all these wonderful recipes. I just wondered if you would be able to tell me how long this one will keep refrigerated and is it suitable for freezing?

    Thanks in advance

    • Hi James.

The longest I’ve had it in fridge is nearly two weeks. Yeah it can be frozen.
