Dogs love homemade dog food
So I usually like to cook my dogs food. They much prefer it to commercial food and of course it’s much better for them. Once a dog get used to real food they can become quite fussy with commercial dog food and out of my three, only Flo will eat commercial when given to her, but my other two will wait it out till the real thing comes along.
It’s not expensive nor complicated
I don’t stick to recipes, I simply go into my local supermarket which happens to be a Morrisons and get whatever is reduced. I’m almost always guaranteed to get liver, kidney or heart going cheap and Morrisons is good for offal, I’ve seen them even sell marrow bones now and again. Once I have the meat I see what veg is going cheap, I like green veg for my dogs, peas are good and frozen ones are cheap. Lot’s of good veggies out there, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, asparagus, turnip etc, whatever your dog likes. Anything but onions and onion family, but a little garlic is good and adds taste. You can bulk it up by adding potatoes, rice, couscous or pasta and it helps keep the cost down.
Start with a good broth
Before I buy any meat and veg I’m gonna start by making bone broth the day before and let it simmer for 24 hours in my Crock-Pot. It makes for a perfect stock, adds tons of goodness and flavour too.
I've got some bones in the freezer so I'll add that to the crock pot with some water and simmer for 24 hours
24 hours later and it's done. All the marrow is now in the stock and it's packed with flavour. Take out the bones.
Look at that stock! Lots of fat and meaty bits have come off the bones too. The perfect stock to start with.
Now let’s go to the supermarket and see what we can add to that amazing stock!
Pigs liver and pig heart both selling at a reduced price!
I also see some Rose Veal Liver selling at half price!
While I'm in the meat isle I pick up some pork rind since it's so cheap.
Onto the veg, the broccoli is reduced so I'll get some of that.
And I'm gonna get a small bag of macaroni to bulk it out a little.
Now that we have everything, it’s time to start cooking the dog food.
I add my broccoli to the stock in my slow cooker.
Add my diced pig heart.
Dice and then add the pig kidneys.
Add the liver.
Since I have some chopped garlic in the fridge I'll add a little for flavour.
Finally I add my macaroni which will help absorb the stock and bulk out the food.
I'll give it a stir and cook for a few hours. Gives me a chance to walk the dogs.
A nice walk in the woods!
Back home it's all cooked, looks amazing and my dogs know it's dinner time.
Leave to cool and serve. Smells amazing. Wish I could get some!
Brodie is hungry and loves his homemade food.
Let’s not forget about that pig rind I bought!
Nothing fancy, just gonna lay pig rind on air fryer basket and cook for 30 mins at 200C or till hard and crispy.
30 mins later and it's done. Break into pieces and I have perfect dog treats for later on if I can resist not eating it myself!
Brodie loves his pork crackling
So it’s all very easy, cheap and conveniant to do. Just do what I do and see what is selling cheap. That big pot will last me at least two days and that’s for three dogs and all for a few quid.
