Since 2010 I’ve spent thousands buying gear I thought would help me one way or another. Most things failed or became redundant but some things worked. So I thought I’d post some handy gear advice to help out new dog walkers. Some of the items I’m sure will really help and I’ll explain why…
Slip Leads
Slip leads are popular among dog walkers due to their simplicity and effectiveness. They consist of a single loop that slips over the dog’s head and tightens gently when pulled, combining the functions of a collar and lead. This design makes them quick and easy to use, especially for walkers managing multiple dogs. They are lightweight, portable, and adjustable, suiting dogs of various sizes, and eliminate the risk of dogs slipping out of traditional collars.
However, they’re not suited for small breeds or dogs with delicate throats and puppies.
Their versatility also makes them useful in emergencies, such as handling stray dogs or replacing a broken collar. Overall, slip leads are a reliable and convenient option for dog walkers, offering control, ease of use, and portability.
Branded Clothing
Business-branded clothing is an excellent investment for dog walkers, offering both practical and professional advantages. Branded uniforms, such as polo shirts, hoodies, or jackets, create a polished and cohesive image, helping to establish trust and credibility with clients. When dog walkers wear clothing featuring their business name, logo, or contact details, it acts as a walking advertisement, increasing visibility and attracting potential customers while out on walks. This is particularly effective in parks or neighbourhoods where dog owners gather. Get your branded clothing here!
First Aid Kit
A pet first aid kit is an essential item that all dog walkers have, and usually stored in their vehicle, as it ensures they are prepared to handle emergencies while out on walks. Accidents or health issues, such as cuts, insect stings, or sudden illnesses, can happen at any time, and having a well-stocked first aid kit allows walkers to provide immediate care before seeking veterinary assistance. Key items to include are bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, a muzzle (for injured or stressed dogs), and a thermal blanket to prevent shock.
Seat Belt Clip
One of the key advantages of using a seat belt clip is that it allows the front passenger seat to be used as an emergency extra space if needed and keeps the dog secure and safe, getting attatched to the dog’s harness. For example, if a dog walker is transporting multiple dogs and requires additional room, they can temporarily secure one dog in the front seat using the clip, freeing up space in the back. Useful for accommodating unexpected changes in transport arrangements. Overall, a dog seat belt clip is a versatile tool that enhances safety, convenience, and adaptability for dog walkers on the go.
Back seat dog hammock
A back seat dog hammock is a highly practical accessory for dog owners and dog walkers who use cars or estates rather than vans. It fits over the back seats, creating a protected and comfortable space for dogs to sit or lie down during journeys.
One of the key benefits is its ability to protect the car’s upholstery from dirt, fur, scratches, and spills, making it ideal for keeping vehicles clean and well-maintained. Many hammocks are waterproof. Additionally, they are easy to install, remove, and clean, making them a convenient solution for regular use. For dog walkers using a car or estate they are a must buy!
Front Seat Car Covers
A front seat car cover is an invaluable accessory for dog owners and walkers, especially during wet and rainy weather. Designed to fit over the front passenger seat, it provides a protective barrier against mud, water, and dirt that dogs can bring in after walks. This helps keep the car’s upholstery clean and dry, preventing stains and damage caused by damp fur or muddy paws.
Front Seat Dog Guard
Essential for dog walkers using cars or estates, a front seat dog guard helps keep dogs securely in the back by blocking the gap between the front two seats. This allows dogs to be placed in the back seats safely without getting into the front while you’re driving. By keeping dogs in the back, it also helps protect the front seats from dirt, fur, and scratches. Overall, a front seat dog guard is a simple yet effective tool for enhancing safety and maintaining order during car journeys with dogs.
Wind Deflectors
Wind deflectors are a practical addition to vehicles, particularly for dog walkers who transport wet dogs after walks in the rain. These deflectors fit over the window frames, allowing the windows to be left slightly open (about an inch) without being visibly obvious and will also stop rain getting into your car. This creates a discreet airflow that helps to dry out the vehicle’s interior, preventing the buildup of dampness and that awful musty, doggy smell that can occur after carrying wet dogs. Without them, your car will smell just awful in no time.
Puppy Carrier
For dog walkers managing a group of dogs, a puppy carrier allows the puppy to socialise and interact with the other dogs and the environment without the risk of over-tiring or injury. It also keeps the puppy safe from potential hazards, such as busy roads or larger, more boisterous dogs. Lightweight, portable, and easy to use, a puppy carrier is an excellent tool for balancing a puppy’s need for socialisation and exercise with their physical limitations, making it a must-have for responsible dog walkers.
Hunting Bag
A hunting bag with netting at the front is an ideal accessory for dog walkers, offering a practical solution for carrying wet, dirty tennis balls and dog toys. The netting allows mud and water to drain away, keeping the items separate from the main compartment of the bag, which can be used for storing clean, dry essentials like dog leads, treats, and personal belongings.
Chuckit! Ball Launcher
Chuckit! makes the best ball launcher by far. They last forever, the ball goes much further than anything else – you’ll never buy another brand again.
Porta Shower
The Hozelock Pressure Sprayer with Shower Attachment is an essential tool for dog walkers, especially when dealing with muddy dogs or those who have rolled in something unpleasant. This handy device allows you to quickly and efficiently rinse off dirt, mud, or mess before the dog gets into the car.
Good Wellies
Every dog walker needs good wellies, I wear wellies more than any other shoe type. Dunlop Purofort are the best and longest lasting by miles over any other brand. But Muck Boots are a very popular brand used by dog walkers and also horse owners.
