MAKE IN JUST 10 MINUTES

This tuna cake for dogs recipe was given to me by Alison, the owner of Brodie and Harris!  It’s the simplest of all my homemade dog food recipes that is prepared and cooked within 10 minutes!  We’re gonna be using a 1.1L food storage container found in any supermarker to make this but you can use a large bowl and cover with a large plate.

INGREDIENTS

  1. 2 tins of tuna in oil or water
  2. 2 eggs
  3. 160g of flour (wholemeal or plain)

METHOD

tuna in a mixing bowl

Add 2 tins of tuna in oil (use the oil/water).

eggs in mixing bowl

Add two eggs

flour in a mixing bowl

Add 160g (5½ oz) of flour

mixed dog cake dough

Mix everything together to form a thick paste-like consistency.

Spread into a microwave-safe container. This is a typical 1.1L size available at every supermarket.

Or you can buy here.

Lay lid slightly ajar on top and cook for 4 minutes, rest for 1, then cook for another minute.

It’s very hot once cooked, so tap out of container and leave to cool.

Have a taste test with the dog, fridge what you will use in a few days and freeze the rest.

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

These dog treat recipes are now available to buy in book on Amazon.   An ideal gift!

  1. I use any tinned fish, mackerel etc. but do not use in brine as too much salt for dogs. also I cook in oven, just guess time and temperature. mine love the mackerel in tomato sauce cake.

  2. Instead of normal flour can chickpea flour used instead like the pancake recipe? as I’ve been told my Yorkie may have a wheat allergy.

    • Yeah, that’s fine Kim.

  3. According to Google, 160g is 1 and 1/2 cups, for those in the US.

  4. Anyone have a response to my question…. are these recipes suitable for an 8 week old puppy?

    • Yeah, they fine, but like all treats give in moderation.

  5. Did the taste test and now my dog is dancing round the kitchen on her hind legs trying to get at the tuna cake! Must be good, thank you!

    • Thanks Viv!

      Hope your dog likes it!

  6. We will be welcoming an eight week old puppy soon, can these recipes be used for one so young? Please advise. Thanks

  7. Sorry if this has been asked before but is th oil important? I normally buy tuna in water, could I add in a bit of olive oil or sunflower oil?

    • If your buying tuna to make these for your dogs, can’t you just buy it in oil, I do. June

    • yeah, whatever you want. the oil just helps it bind.

  8. LOVE your website Many thanks

  9. Definately going to try this but no microwave!! How long should I cook it for ?

    • I’ve never tried it in the oven, just keep an eye on it and if you’d like to let me know I can add it to the recipe.

    • Keen to know about timing in oven as mentioned previously. Has anyone done this successfully please??? I’ve made several of the other recipes already and seem to all get the seal of approval from all my 3 dogs!

    • You can do it in frying pan, too. Make sure frying pan hot, then fry gently over medium heat for couple of minutes on each side. Stick fork in the middle to check if done – if fork teeth dry when you pull it out, it is done, if not, fry a bit longer . Tuna cooks quickly.
