MAKE IN JUST 10 MINUTES

This tuna cake for dogs recipe was given to me by Alison, the owner of Brodie and Harris!  It’s the simplest of all my homemade dog food recipes that is prepared and cooked within 10 minutes!  We’re gonna be using a 1.1L food storage container found in any supermarker to make this but you can use a large bowl and cover with a large plate.

INGREDIENTS

  1. 2 tins of tuna in oil or water
  2. 2 eggs
  3. 160g of flour (wholemeal or plain)

METHOD

tuna in a mixing bowl

Add 2 tins of tuna in oil (use the oil/water).

eggs in mixing bowl

Add two eggs

flour in a mixing bowl

Add 160g (5½ oz) of flour

mixed dog cake dough

Mix everything together to form a thick paste-like consistency.

Spread into a microwave-safe container. This is a typical 1.1L size available at every supermarket.

Or you can buy here.

Lay lid slightly ajar on top and cook for 4 minutes, rest for 1, then cook for another minute.

It’s very hot once cooked, so tap out of container and leave to cool.

Have a taste test with the dog, fridge what you will use in a few days and freeze the rest.

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

These dog treat recipes are now available to buy in book on Amazon.   An ideal gift!

  1. can I bake them in a oven? And if so what temp? And can I Dehydrate these in a Food dehydrator ?

    • I doubt it would dehydrate well. You could bake it in the over, look at the liver cake recipe for more info as they quite similar.

  2. Can I use ordinary plain or self raising flour

    • Either is fine Linda

  3. My 7 month old pup went daft over this, highly recommend it.

  4. just made this for my dog used tuna in brine but drianed the brine off and rinsed tuna and added sunflower oil instead measured the amount of brine and added the same amount of oil dog loves them.

    • Hey, thanks, really pleased your dog liked them.

  5. I have made this loads of time…great for dog training (I cut up & freeze)…my Shepherd has food allergies & can only eat fish based food (but no Salmon) so I’m looking for more fish recipes ? (I’ve made your sardine cakes too) 🙂

  6. Hi can I use tune in brine?

  7. I successfully substitute porridge oats for strong flour (to avoid grain content) when making liver cake. Does this work with the tuna loaf? Suppose it can be cooked the same way as liver cake — ???

  8. I don’t have a microwave xD but how long can I oven cook them for?

    • I cooked it at 200C for about 25 minutes

  9. Hi, this might sound like a daft question but once frozen do you defrost before giving to your dog? Look forward to trying the tuna loaf.

    • Hey Zoe. Yeah, but they should only take a 10 minutes to defrost.
