Liver and Kidney cake

My first ever dog cake recipe

Made them for the first time the other day for a gala day I was attending.  Made the night before the gala I was a bit nervous if they would even turn out ok, but I needn’t have worried, this recipe is bullet proof and its hard to get it wrong.  So it turned out really well.  More like a cake/bread like texture than biscuit.  This is done generally using just liver but I was low on liver and had some kidney so put that in too.  I don’t have exact guidelines for doing this but there is not much too it, just prepare and chuck it together then cook it!

Ingredients

One packet of liver, Two packets of kidney, A good few eggs, Wholemeal flour

Method

Put the liver, kidney and an egg or two into the blender (you probably won’t get it all into a blender on one go so might have to do it in segments).

Blitz until it has the consistency of a thick smoothie.  Please note it’s awful thick and will test your blender’s motor.  Also check regularly that stringy bits of fat havent twined themselves around the blade.  Next, fold in the flour.  Add the flour in parts till it’s about it 50% flour to 50% meat.

You will now have a thick sticky goo that you can spread into a big slab onto the baking tray, when I did it, it was about an inch thick once spread evenly on the baking tray.

Put into a preheated oven at 150c for around 2 hours.  Once cooked it kinda resembles a non risen bread.  Cut into small squares and put into freezer for when you need them.

Alternativley another very similar pup treat is my recipe for liver cake for dogs which comes in an easy step by step guide.

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. You can use cake tins lined with baking paper – greaseproof. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

  1. My dogs are crazy about that cake. I made mine also with hearts, coconut flour and time to time I add some tripe (not often cos it`s very smelly while baking).

  2. We have a puppy – miniature yorkie. She’s a nightmare to feed – talk about fussy!!! Our other dog (now sadly in doggie heaven) loved your liver cake and other recipes of yours. I was wondering if you could suggest something that would tempt my fussy yorkie pup seeing as our jack russell used to love any of your recipes. Going to try the liver cake for fussy pup though.

  4. Thank you for all your excellent info. I made similar cake and cut into tiny training cubes. They can be eaten straight from freezer because there is such a low water content. I just bagged them into 100g servings to make it easy for access and judging that not too much was being fed over the week. My Lhasa Apso would do any amount of training and pay attention when she could smell them,. Talking about smell they really only give off smell when cooking then cooling, after that no problem.
