BDWS turns 10 years old

10 years ago today I visited the job centre for the last time and signed off and on that day Bishopton dog walking services was born.  I had no money, no car, no experience, no plan, and no real idea on how to be a dog walker.

The first thing I did was learn how to build a website and then I made, printed and posted flyers through every door in the village.  You may have got one if you lived in Bishopton at the time.  You can see that flyer (with old rubbish logo) below.  Very slowly I began getting work – Facebook wasn’t a big deal back then.  I eventually bought a cheap compact camera and started blogging on my dog walking blog.

These were the leaflets I first designed when I just started

The first two years were slow and I didn’t think it was going to work out but by year three and several second-hand cars later, things began to take off.  I even started making dog treat recipes which took off when my liver cake recipe went viral.

A sincere and huge thank you to everyone that has supported me over the years and given me the chance to walk their dog, without your support there would simply be no BDWS, including the chance to walk Dargavel dogs that have all moved into the area with their pups.

Sadly, this week was also the last walk for Mylo who’s just a bit too old now for the big walks, but he loved his big walk at Finlaystone and the chance to take a swim underneath the waterfall.

Also a happy birthday to Sia, Elsa, Ella & Roxy who all celebrated their birthdays last week too.

Below are photos taken from this weeks walks, with many taken at Finlaystone Country Estate which is beautiful right now. Images are quite large so it may take a little longer to load.

BDWS is owned and run by me, Jamie Shanks. I’ve been a professional dog walker since 2010. When I’m not walking dogs, I’m usually at home entertaining my three dogs and attending to five hens and my vegetable garden.

  1. Great to read this just now, despite you writing it some time ago now. I do check in on your blog fairly frequently just to see the latest. I recall we are communicated a couple of years ago (maybe 3 now) and it was a joy to hear how you have built things up then. I do really like all your cartoon type animations throughout the website too, like the one for this article. They’re very creative and quite funny. Do you make them yourself on computer, or scan them in from hand drawings?

    • Hi Ted! Thanks. Well, I make some myself or I hire a digital artist to do them. I find ones I like on

  2. Fantastic photos, Jamie, congratulations on your 10 yr milestone. Love the pic of Flo with ears flying! Mylo loved his last walk and swim with the gang. All the best for your next 10 yrs and beyond…

    • Thanks very much Pam. Glad Mylo is doing so well. He’s still doing great for an old fella.

  3. Congrats on 10 years Jamie!!! Love what you do and how you do it; some really lovely pics this week – adore the one of Duffy blissed out in the bluebells and that one of Potiphar & Chilli is a keeper ?

    • Thanks Isobel. Some nice pics and Finlaystone makes a nice change for the dogs

  4. Wonderful blog, and pictures – A joy to read and those pictures tell a story…Sad to see Mylo no longer able to come out on the bigger walks due to age, it happen to us all, but what fun he has had in his life… All because of you… Loved wee Chilli sunbathing. You see such friendships these pupsters have with each other, bet they can’t wait for their walks with you, what a greeting you must get when you go to collect them!

    • Thanks Margaret. I walk some great dogs and they have been walked together so long they see each other as family. Since it’s 10 years so many dogs are getting old, but the last year or so quite a few pups have joined.
