How to make liver cake

This liver cake recipe is very simple to make, cheap and the perfect cake for dogs.  All supermarkets sell liver so it’s easy to find, Morrisons is probably your best bet and local butchers too but if you can’t get liver you can use other ingredients for your dog cake mix, like minced beef, kidney, heart, chicken livers or even tuna!  Once cooked put what you won’t be using in the next couple of days in the freezer until needed.  Defrosts in just minutes once out of the freezer.  You can top with cream cheese if you want to add frosting.  Alternatively, instead of using a cake tin try using a cupcake tray.  Check out my pupcake recipe for details.  Or for a different cake recipe, try my carrot cake recipe for dogs.

Liver cake is deal as a treat, a dog birthday cake, selling at fairs etc.

We’ll be using a 9″ cake tin. You can buy online here.

Items Needed

  • 9" cake tin
  • Hand Blender

Ingredients

  • 500g ( 1lb) of liver
  • 2 Eggs
  • 200g (7oz) Wholemeal flour
  • A splash of milk

Method

How to store

As a general guide if meat protein is present in recipe then it will last around 3 to 5 days stored in a cool place.  If it has second class protein in it eg. cheese, lentils, eggs, etc, then they will store for about 10 days in a cool place. If there is no meat or second class proteins present then it will last around 3 weeks before they go soft like human biscuits.

  1. This recipe is fab, I have a german shepherd who is in no way food oriented, so sometimes can make training harder work……except when it comes to this liver cake. she will (literally) do anythng for this. Thank you very much.

    • That’s great that she likes them and they are helping her! Liver is a natural laxative!

  3. Thanks for the recipe!! I have 6 dogs so I can cut up and put the whole cake in a freezer bag and put in the refrigerator and it lasts me about a week. They love it and all hang out in the kitchen while I’m making it. Doesn’t cost much to make and is very easy.

    • Thanks for your reply, Robin! It’s great how easy it is to make! I love the fact the you can chuck it all together, bake it and the dogs will always love it!

  4. You say put in the oven but what kind of temperature are we talking about and if I am putting it in a round cake tin what diameter should it have?

    • Hi Kate,

Pic 8, temp 150c. The smaller the size the quicker it will cook, you should just keep an eye on it. For example the tray size above will take about 1hr 30 mins – 2 hours but a cupcake size will take around 40 mins.

    • Thanks Jamie, thats a real help! I’m sure my dog will love this recipe and will be watching me the whole time!

  5. Thanks for letting me know I appreciate it!

  7. Hi, This recipe looks great and I can’t wait to make it for my dogs! I have a question though… you say to freeze once cooled, but how long will they last without being frozen?? My reason for asking is because I want to make and sell some doggie treats for a charity event and want to be able tell my customers how to store them. Please help!! x

    • In the fridge they should last about 5 days pretty easily…probably a bit longer. In the freezer as long as it’s put in fresh it will last months and months and months! Been told this by a canine dietician!

  8. I can only get cow’s liver, is that ok to use?

  9. Hi, I was looking for a recipe for my dog’s birthday. i’m going to make your cake for him and his friends. I hope my result will look as nice as your cake. Your last sentence about the dog watching you the whole time, made me laugh. Pretty shure its going to be the same here! 🙂
