liver cake recipe for dogs

Liver cake recipe for dogs

This liver cake recipe is very simple to make, cheap and the perfect cake for dogs. All supermarkets sell liver so it’s easy to find, Morrisons is probably your best bet and local butchers too but if you can’t get liver you can use other ingredients for your dog cake mix, like minced beef, kidney, heart, chicken livers or even tuna!

dehydrated beef

Dehydrated dog treat recipes

Dried dog treats made from real meat are expensive and difficult to justify when cheaper, mass-produced, processed treats are available on the same store shelf. But dehydrators are cheap to buy and even cheaper to run and it’s very simple to learn how to dry treats for dogs! I’d been wanting a dehydrator, but I couldn’t find any online guides for making dog treats – only human jerky recipes.

sardine oatcakes

Sardine oatcakes

This is personally my favourite recipe on my blog, partly cause it was the first original treat I made myself that worked out. If you need super high-value treats – you’ve just found them! Your dog will love these oatcakes; they are tasty, healthy, smell great, and just so easy to make! And from preparation to cooking time they take less than one hour!

liver treat recipe for dogs

Dried liver dog treats

This dog treat can’t be beat. This is what I use for treats when I’m walking all my dogs and there is a huge difference to how the pups respond to these homemade treats for dogs compared processed shop-bought stuff and if you do this you will see why they’re the best dog training treats you can get! It’s very cheap to buy liver from your local supermarket or butcher (much cheaper than branded treats and a whole lot better for your dog).

tuna loaf dog treat recipe

Tuna loaf

This tuna loaf dog treat recipe was given to me by Alison, the owner of Brodie and Harris! It’s the simplest all my homemade dog food recipes that is prepared and cooked within 10 minutes! We’re gonna be using a 1.1L food storage container found in any supermarker to make this but you can use a large bowl and cover with a large plate.

homemade dog biscuit

Homemade dog biscuit recipe‏

Bev is our in-house canine behaviourist/dietitian and last week I decided to try and make her favourite dog biscuit recipe and they turned out so well! Every dog I walked last week loved them far more than I could’ve ever have hoped for. Even the dogs that aren’t food orientated stopped and took notice!

Low fat dog biscuit recipe

A pancreatic diet is first and foremost very low fat but also with no added processed sugars, so as an example in this recipe the only fat is what is in banana and the only sugars are the natural simple ones already in the ingredients, hence no butter, no oil, no honey, no malt and no fats.

banana peanut butter and honey buns

Banana bombs

I thought a meat free dog treat recipe without using liver or meat would make a nice change so I thought I’d try banana alongside peanut butter and honey to make recipe I call Banana Bombs! These dog treats are great, they have a hard crusty shell which makes them excellent to carry around but moist and bready inside and packed with flavour! Dogs love them!

puppy teething biscuit recipe

Puppy biscuit recipe

The puppy of Bev (our canine dietitian) is teething at the moment and to remedy this and save her coffee table from getting chewed to bits she made this puppy biscuit recipe which is rock hard and satisfying for emerging teeth. These puppy teething rusks are large and thick for a reason so if you break them up into small treats then you’re missing the point.

gluten free dog biscuit recipe

Gluten free dog treat recipe

Our canine dietitian Bev Cobley has given us a new biscuit to try. When I made this recipe the first time I took ALL the biscuits with me while I did my dog walking and the dogs just loved them. By the end of the day, I had none left! Thumbs up from the dogs! This gluten free dog treat recipe is dead easy to make and from start to finish it can be done within an hour with little mess and the great thing is you can add your dog’s favourite food to flavour it!

gingerbread men dog biscuit recipe

Gingerbread men biscuit recipe

Add ginger to biscuits and you can make a delicious dog treat. Ginger has been known for a long time to be very effective in combating motion sickness in dogs as well as people. These biscuits are easy to make and dogs think they are very tasty whether they’re traveling or not! Because we are making gingerbread men, I’m using a gingerbread man biscuit cutter, you can buy here if you need one.

bone broth for dogs

Bone Broth for dogs

“Good broth will resurrect the dead“ – Old South American proverb. Bone broth is a immune boosting super food and ideal for getting sick pets back on their feet and for maintaining the health of an active dog. Even sick dogs that are not eating will enjoy a bowl of broth and you can add it to their food to help them eat. Bone broth for dogs is great as it’s packed with minerals like like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium in forms that are easily absorbed by your dog .

Pig trotter brawn

Pig trotters are a powerhouse of collagen, protein, and essential nutrients, making them ideal for dogs of all ages and sizes. The slow-simmered broth transforms into a jelly-like brawn that’s not only tasty but also supports joint mobility, skin health, and digestion. By adding vegetables like peas, carrots, celery, and parsley, etc this recipe delivers vital vitamins and minerals, ensuring your dog gets a balanced, natural diet.

dog biscuit recipe

Cheesy dog biscuits

So with these cheese dog treats the key is to roll them out thin, cut them out small and cook them quick! Nice with a strong cheese taste! I’ve been checking out dog biscuit recipes online. They vary so much and it’s difficult to find a similar theme with many looking like they are being cooked for humans rather than dogs.

Pork scratchings recipe

The truth is homemade dog treats are a whole lot healthier, cheaper and tastier than the treats you buy in pet shops. Pork scratching’s are a great dog treat. So easy to make, no cooking skills required and cheap as chips. I buy the pork rind from Morrisons supermarket for about 50p – 80p a pack, best times to find them at my store is Saturdays. But if you know a nice butcher and are friendly then you could get it for free.

jelly baby recipe for dogs

Jelly Baby recipe for dogs

Are these the healthiest dog treats in the world?
For this recipe all you need is gelatin, bone broth, a little garlic paste and a mould to set it in – how could it be any easier than that? It is not just super tasty but super healthy, too. Gelatin is great for the skin, nails, coat and joints.

Add a cup of water, a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and a handful of chopped parsley.

Liver and heart dog's dinner

I have 4 clumbers and a springer, so in total we are looking at a total 165 kilo of dog! Yesterday on Tesco’s sell off shelf there was 2 packs of pig liver and 1 pack of sliced heart with a total price £2.10. In the fridge I had a sorry looking neep that wasn’t used on burns night alongside some rather wilted carrots and half a bag of sorry looking mange tout and some left over mash tatties.

pupcakes

Pupcake recipe for dogs

I was seeing a new client today, so afterward I nipped into Morrisons to get some shopping and for fun, I bought the ingredients for liver cake. I’d been thinking about trying to cook the liver cake in a cupcake tray rather than a big cake. So I bought a cupcake tray for £1 and thought I may as well blog my attempt to make … liver pupcakes!

pigs head in a sink

Pig head dog food recipe

We often get pig heads. Sometimes they come cut in half but often a whole head. If you are not squeamish then they really are an ideal source of dog meat…lets face it…not so many years ago the components of a pig’s head was thought of as good human food. I and my sisters certainly grew up eating it and the dogs got what we couldn’t/didn’t eat. Brawn, tongue, cheeks, homemade haslet etc…

fish dog food recipe

Fish dog food recipe

This is a great alternative to using red meat. You can get cheap white fish in the supermarkets if you look in the freezer section. As of writing this recipe Asda are doing a deal where you can buy two 1kg bags of frozen Pollock fillets for just £6. We are using cabbage and mangetout but you can also try cabbage and kale, along with those ingredients we are also using sweet potatoes, carrots and parsnips.

vegetable peeling dog treats

Vegetable peeling crisps!

Yeah I know, you’re thinking they’re not healthy, but veggie peelings are packed with nutrients. Cooked in a high heat resistant oil like , coconut oil, olive oil (temp must be below 190°C 350°F) or good old fashioned lard, these treats are delicious and I just couldn’t stop eating them myself! I had three dogs in my house when cooking them and they all just adored them.

Kong stuffing recipes

Kong stuffing ideas: The art of kong stuffing is not difficult to learn, but there are requirements for them to work, both for the dog and the human to be satisfied. First you need to decide what the kong is for. Is it a meal in itself? A reward for being good? A treat to be left with when you go out between meals? Whatever it’s function there are some rules to follow.

Add parsley

Pork belly and liver recipe

Not knowing exactly what I was going to buy I went to Morrisons today to get some things to make more dog food. My dog Ruby has been on the homemade dog food straight for a few weeks and her coat is already full and lush and her eyes sparkle! So in the supermarket today I went over to the ‘still fresh’ shelves in the veg department and found some half price Brussels sprouts, half price mangetout then picked up some potatoes and a pack of macaroni then headed to the sell off shelves in the fridge section and found some pork belly and a packet of liver!

pancake recipe dog treat

Pancake recipe for dogs

Pancakes for dogs. A delicious and easy to make pancake recipe using chickpea flour (gram flour) instead of wheat flour. dog on dumgoyne summit

A guide on feeding the dog

A suitable diet encompasses all of the essential and non-essential amino acids, balanced with carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water; thus providing the dog with a healthy intake of all the necessary nutrients. Although it is important that the diet is palatable to the dog it is important that it is easily digestible and adequate to meet the individual needs of the dog according to age, health and activities. Dog nutrition should be a concern to all dog managers/carers because ‘optimal nutrition underlies optimal health’ Barbara Fougere, BSCBVMS (hons).

calming dog biscuits

Diabetic dog biscuit recipe

These cinnamon biscuits are good for periods of anxiety; vet visits, times of separation, groomers, stressful situations, etc. Cinnamon is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and also lowers blood sugar. As the sweetness comes from the sweet potatoes and bananas, this is an ideal treat for dogs with diabetes. Sweet potato is a natural soporific so is a good relaxant and an excellent natural sleep aid. They are also a good source of vitamins and minerals.

Liver and Kidney cake

Made them for the first time the other day for a gala day I was attending. Made the night before the gala I was a bit nervous if they would even turn out ok, but I needn’t have worried, this recipe is bullet proof and its hard to get it wrong. So it turned out really well. More like a cake/bread like texture than biscuit. This is done generally using just liver but I was low on liver and had some kidney so put that in too. I don’t have exact guidelines for doing this but there is not much too it, just prepare and chuck it together then cook it!

Teeth soothing biscuits

Ginger is good for sore teeth and gums and chamomile is a calmer and reduces anxiety. Chamomile tea is made by steeping dried chamomile in hot water and straining but you can buy chamomile tea bags. A slice of ginger root rubbed on gums will bring immediate relief for sore gums. These biscuits that are crunchy on the outside but softer in the middle are good for teething puppies or oldies who may have worn teeth and sore gums with the added benefit of sweet-smelling breath.

animal offal in a sink

Offally good dog food recipe

Lites (plucks) are animal lungs and sold as offal…they are used in haggis and in faggots and often minced and added to pork for sausages…they are a main food used in tinned dog food, but as tinned dog food is 80% water you are paying a high price for a very cheap source of meat…think about this…if you pay £1 per tin then you are paying 80p for the water and 20p for the meat content and and vegetable scraps added…as an average they are composed of 75% good quality protein and 25% easily digestible fats…most game registered butchers will sell you lites very cheaply and because of the high protein content dogs don’t need much of them…

Flapjack recipe for dogs

Lentils are an excellent source of iron, fibre and 2nd class protein. Being low in calories but high in fibre helps dogs that seem hungry all the time to feel more full. Great for dogs on a diet or having a history of not self-emptying full anal glands. Once a manual gland emptying starts then you got it for life without dietary changes .

dog doughnut recipe

Doughnuts for dogs recipe

Your dog will love it and your friends really will be amazed! This recipe took time. First I bought a doughnut maker which used a batter to make a doughnut shaped pancake then I tried using carob as a choc substitute to make a lovely looking choc icing but my dog Ruby hated it no matter how much I tried to make it more appetising. Carob sucks and dogs don’t like it. Other dog treat recipes on the web use it to to replace choc chip in cookies or to replace choc in other recipes but they use it to sell the recipe to YOU the owner, it’s not there for the dog!

birthday cake for dogs recipe

Carrot cake recipe for dogs

Just for a bit of fun and I know there’s quite a few people that like baking birthday cakes for their dogs. Nothing fancy in this recipe, just a simple carrot cake using a few local ingredients found anywhere and easy to make. Dogs love it and for the icing, we are using cream cheese which dogs also love. Perfect for a good dog or a special occasion.

sponge finger recipe for dogs

Sponge finger recipe for dogs

I made this recipe after babysitting my grandchild who wouldn’t eat her Nana’s food that was home-cooked. ? So we had to go get stuff in jars … and the baby wouldn’t eat that either ?. So I used the baby food and turned it into doggy cake. Doggy sponge fingers!

recipe for beetroot dog biscuits

Beet Bites

Beetroot is a good source of vitamin C, fibre, folate, manganese, and potassium, and sold everywhere. This biscuit recipe makes a nice hard crunchy dog treat using precooked beetroot I bought on sale in my local Co-op. Add some oats, flour, a beaten egg, and just for fun some golden breadcrumbs and you have a purplish tasty dog treat. I’m using these biscuit cutters if you are interested but any will do.
